The Rainfall Index (RI) plans of insurance are designed as risk management tools to insure against declines in an index in a designated area called a grid. They are primarily intended for use by producers whose crop production tends to follow the average precipitation or vegetation patterns for the grid. It is possible for you to have low crop production on the acreage that you insure and still not receive a payment under these plans. Because the program is designed for producers whose crop production tends to follow average patterns and not individual crop production, you should review the historical indices, additional tools, and information provided to determine if these programs are suitable for your risk management needs.
Annual Forage
The Rainfall Index – Annual Forage is a federally-reinsured pilot program that provides coverage for acreage planted annually to forage, used for grazing or as hay for livestock. This program consists of four growing seasons – September through March, December through June, March through September and June through November. Producers may select from a variety of coverage levels, productivity factors and two-month index intervals to personalize their plan. Losses are calculated based on the deviation from normal precipitation for the grid and index interval(s) selected.
Apiculture
The Apiculture Pilot Insurance Program (API) provides a safety net for beekeepers’ primary income sources – honey, pollen collection, wax, and breeding stock. Apiculture systems consist of different types of plants or crops and often contain mixtures of different species, each with different growth habits and seasons, precipitation requirements, and other climate conditions necessary to maintain plant growth over extended periods of time. API was designed to provide maximum flexibility to cover these diverse situations.
Pasture, Rangeland and Forage
RI-PRF is a federally-reinsured product that provides protection against a single peril – lack of precipitation. Coverage can be purchased by landlords, tenants and owner/operators for those acres important to their haying or grazing operation. Producers may select from a variety of coverage levels, productivity factors and two-month index intervals to personalize their plan. The Rainfall Index program uses weather data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to determine rainfall levels. When the final grid index falls below your trigger grid index, you may receive an indemnity.
